Description

An Exceptional Victorian Statement: The Norfolk Manor Chesterfield (Circa 1880)

Provenance & Restoration Sourced from the drawing room of a historic Norfolk manor house, this original Victorian-era Chesterfield is a rare survivor of 19th-century English cabinetry. It has undergone a sympathetic, museum-grade restoration, preserving the soul of the piece while ensuring its structural integrity for the next century.

Master-Level Craftsmanship

  • The Frame: Constructed from massive, slow-grown solid English Oak. Unlike modern reproductions, this frame is dowelled and tenoned by hand to withstand generations of use.

  • The Suspension: The pinnacle of traditional upholstery. It features a true 8-way hand-tied coiled spring system in the seat, providing a nuanced, “active” support that modern foam or zig-zag springs cannot replicate. The back is equally sophisticated, featuring a traditionally sprung profile for a firm yet inviting silhouette.

  • The Leather: Upholstered in 100% Full-Bodied Top Grain Leather. The hide has been “crust-dyed” and then finished by hand using a multi-tonal Tobacco & Tan staining process. This creates a “distressed-vibrant” patina that will continue to develop unique character over time.

Period Features

  • Authentic Deep Buttoning: The seat and back feature deep-set, hand-pulled diamond tufting, a hallmark of the 1880s aesthetic.

  • Artisan Finishes: The sofa is elevated on hand-turned English Oak bun feet, fitted with solid heavy-gauge brass castors for effortless movement and a refined stance.

  • Tack Detail: Hand-applied antiqued brass studding traces the elegant roll of the arms, defining the classic Chesterfield profile.
