The Chesterfield deep-buttoned sofa appears to be synonymous with traditional English furniture design, its origins dating back to mid 18th century. In circa 1773 the 4th Earl of Chesterfield commissioned the cabinet maker Adam to specially design a piece of furniture that would permit gentlemen to sit with the back straight and avoid what the Earl referred to as 'odd motions, strange postures and ungenteel carriage'. We can only assume the style of furniture constructed was the forerunner of the now famous Chesterfield sofa.
